About KMU

Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University (KMÜ), which took its name from the third and the greatest ruler of the Karamanids Principality, Karamanoğlu Mehmet Bey, who proclaimed Turkish as a state language for the first time, was established on May 29, 2007 with the law numbered 5662.

With the foundation of Karaman Vocational School in our city in 1987, the foundations of the university were established. Higher educational activities were carried out as a part of Selcuk University with three faculties, two high schools and three vocational schools between 1987 and 2007. In accordance with the law number 5662, it was separated from Selçuk University with its academic units and affiliated with Karamanoglu Mehmetbey University. Today, Karamanoglu Mehmetbey University provides higher education service with its seven faculties, two institutes, a college and five vocational schools.

Karamanoglu Mehmetbey University takes its place as an important institution with its more than 800 staff, about 15.000 students, 38 undergraduate degree, 66 associate degree and 27 graduate degree programs. It aims to contribute especially to the field of Turkish language, food and energy significantly with its large campus, laboratories and conference halls at international standards, social and sportive facilities. Moreover, it aims to be a favourite higher education institution of people in its region by developing a brotherhood relationship with Balkan and Middle East countries. 

Library

Karamanoglu Mehmetbey University Central Library; it is a very modern library with a 300.000 book capacity, 42 individual and 11 group study rooms, an internet access centre with 55 computers, a disabled and audiovisual unit, an automatic borrowing-returning station, lockers, catalog scanning units, 7/24 open study rooms, conference and seminar halls where 750 readers can read books at the same time.

Besides, the KMU Library has a large number of international database subscriptions.

Where is KMU?

KMU is located in Karaman, which is one of the nice cities of Central Anatolia. Karaman is surrounded by Konya, Antalya and Mersin. Karaman’s history dates back to 10000 BC. It was known as Landa/Laranda (Larende). It became the capital city of Karamanids, which was one of the Turkish seigniory (1256-1487) founded in Anatolia. It was a county of Konya, until it became the 70th city of the Republic of Türkiye on the 21stof June in 1989.

Karaman is called as the capital city of Turkish language thanks to Karamanoglu Mehmet Bey’s edict “From now on, nobody can speak any languages except for Turkish at home, in the council, in the assembly or in public places ("Şimdiden geru hiç kimsene kapuda ve divanda ve mecalis ve seyranda Türkî dilinden gayri dil söylemeye") that was published on the 13th of May in 1277. Karaman is also one of the noticeable cities in Türkiye in the field of food and energy as well as Turkish language.
