Back Cover Text:

The currents of nationalism began to spread throughout the world starting from Europe in the 19th century, and the Ottoman Empire, due to its financial, administrative, and social problems, could not escape the influence of these nationalist movements. Although the social crises that developed on the basis of nationalism caused non-Turkish elements to break away from the Ottoman Empire, they also led to the emergence of a social and political organization, such as the Committee of Union and Progress (İttihat ve Terakki), which gained support from the intellectuals within the Empire. Through this organization, society became acquainted with the constitutional regime (Meşrutiyet), which was unfamiliar to them. Over time, the leadership cadre of the Committee of Union and Progress, which began to take part in state administration and eventually seized full control of the government, promoted the concept of ittihad-ı anasır (unity of elements) in an effort to preserve the multi-ethnic structure of the society. Aiming to protect the unity of the country, they sought to raise a new type of citizen, starting with children. As a result, subjects such as malumat-ı medeniye (civic knowledge) and ahlakiye (ethics) were incorporated into the educational curriculum with the aim of educating the public.
