The History Department, established by the decision taken at the meeting of the Higher Education Executive Board on 19.11.2008, consists of the departments of Ancient History, Medieval History, New Era History, Modern History, History of the Republic of Turkey, General Turkish History, History of Ottoman Institutions and Civilization. Our department started education in the 2009-2010 academic year and the first graduates were given in 2013.

Undergraduate education in our department covers a period of four years. The language of education is Turkish. In addition to compulsory courses, students can also take elective courses in the field they want to specialize in. The education program carried out in the History Department aims to train historians.

Our department accepts a number of undergraduate students determined by the Council of Higher Education each year. Graduates of high schools or equivalent schools who want to receive undergraduate education in the program must have received a sufficient score from the Higher Education Institutions Exam.

Students who enroll in the History Department must complete 240 ECTS by taking elective courses in addition to compulsory courses in order to graduate.

Students' success is evaluated within the scope of written and oral exams, assignments given during the semester, and seminars. Students who receive one of the grades A, B, C, D, or E from a course are considered to have passed that course. Otherwise, they repeat these courses.

Our department offers Master's and Doctorate programs in the History Department. In addition, graduates of the department can pursue postgraduate education in the departments of History, Ancient History, Medieval History, New Era History, Modern History, Turkish Republic History, General Turkish History, Ottoman Institutions and Civilization History, provided that they meet the necessary requirements.

There are 20 academic staff in the History Department of Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University, Faculty of Letters.

The outcomes that students will gain upon successful completion of our department are as follows:

1. Possesses sufficient knowledge and expertise in their field.

2. Conducts research and analysis in their field by making use of different disciplines.

3. Collects information, documents, and other materials for the study of historical events, and interprets the results using scientific methods.

4. Is able to work individually as well as effectively take part in team projects.

5. Expresses the findings obtained from research in their field both in written and oral form.

6. Believes in the necessity of lifelong learning and continuously improves their professional knowledge and skills.

7. Acts in accordance with professional and scientific ethical values, remains impartial, and approaches historical events from an objective perspective.

8. Knows and applies historical research and writing methods.

9. Makes use of technological tools and resources, archives, libraries, and other institutions in historical research.

10. Has knowledge of Islamic history and geography, understands the historical roots of current issues, and analyzes related problems.

11. Has knowledge of Turkish history and culture and interprets their historical development.

12. Recognizes, identifies, and uses the sources of Turkish history.

13. Is sensitive to the preservation of historical heritage and texture.

14. Follows current global developments and issues related to their field and analyzes the causes and consequences of events.

15. Is familiar with the civilizations of Ancient Near East, studies historical artifacts, and introduces them to others.

16. Has knowledge of the foundation and development process of the Republic of Türkiye.

17. Reads and evaluates source texts and documents related to Ottoman history.

What are the Job Opportunities for History Department Graduates?

Students who graduate from the history department are given the title of "Historian". Historians can also work in the public and private sectors. Teaching is the first job opportunity in the history department. A historian who completes his undergraduate education can take a formation training and become a teacher. They can also work as an instructor after passing the necessary exams in Turkey and abroad. Academic careers are also among the job opportunities in the history department. A historian who completes his undergraduate education can start his job by completing his master's and doctorate education.
